New EC rule mandates counting of postal ballots before penultimate round of counting EVM

ANNOUNCING its 30th major initiative to streamline and bring transparency in the electoral process in the country, the Election Commission of India (ECI) has announced a new time slot for counting postal ballots, officials said on Thursday.
They said directives have been issued to Returning Officers (ROS) to complete the counting of postal ballots before the penultimate round of counting of EVM/VVPAT votes.
The move comes amid a significant increase in the number of postal ballots following the poll panel's recent initiatives to enable home voting for Persons with Disabilities (PwDs) and senior citizens aged 85 and above. The officials said that the latest move is aimed at ensuring uniformity, reducing delays, and enhancing transparency in the counting process.
