Five-time Haryana CM Chautala dies at 89

A prominent leader of the Jat community, Chautala's political career was marked by dizzying highs and rockbottom lows, including stints in jail.

The Haryana government has announced a three-day state mourning in his honour from December 20 to 22.

Chautala, the eldest son of former Deputy Prime Minister Chaudhary Devi Lal, died after suffering a cardiac arrest at his residence in Gurugram. He was rushed to the hospital but could not be saved.

His last public appearance was during the Haryana assembly elections on October 5, 2024, when he visited a polling booth in Chautala village, Sirsa district.

Chautala's career was marred by legal troubles, most notably the teacher recruitment scam of 2000 and the 1990 Meham assembly seat violence.
