Andhra reservoirs, dams choke as rainfall persists

INCESSANT rainfall and influx of water inflows from the upstream regions are helping the AP reservoirs and dams to be chock full. According to the Andhra Pradesh Water Resources Information and Management System, all the 110 reservoirs, including major, medium and minor, the state currently has a storage of 760.03 (75.67%) TMC of water, which is almost 92 TMC of water excess when compared to the last year.

In 2024, the reservoirs had a storage of 668 TMC by August 10. The Gross Capacity of all the reservoirs is 1,004.34, and the water sources authorities are expecting that the remaining shortage would be filled by the end of this month.

It should be noted that 20 years ago the reservoirs in the state witnessed this level of water storage by August 1st week. Generally, the reservoirs are filled to capacity by September, that too sporadically.
