AFSPA extended in Manipur hills for six months

AMID raging protests by students against the kidnapping and killing of two Meitei youths, the Manipur government on Wednesday extended the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act, or AFSPA, for another six months in the state barring 19 police stations in the Imphal valley and another area near the Assam border.
A government notification said the state government took the decision after analysing the law and order situation.
“The Governor hereby accords approval to declare the entire state of Manipur, excluding the areas falling under the jurisdiction of the 19 police stations… as disturbed area for a period of six months with effect from October 1, 2023,” the notification read.
