UNENDING RUGBY SEASON TAKES ITS TOLL

IT IS four years since South Africa's leading provincial teams made the seismic shift from the Super Rugby competition with New Zealand and Australia to the northern hemisphere's United Rugby Championship (URC).

The nine-month-long tournament pits the Bulls, Sharks, Lions, and Stormers against the best club teams from Ireland, Wales, Scotland, Italy, and Ireland. The latest edition of the tournament kicks off on Friday night and - 18 rounds later - the marathon tournament culminates in a final next May.
In the inaugural URC in 2022, South Africa hit the ground running, with the Stormers prevailing in the final they hosted against the Bulls. The unfortunate Pretoria team has gone on to stumble in a further two finals, and South Africa has not landed a title since that Stormers triumph.
