Funding crisis threatens special needs education in KZN

THE FUNDING crisis faced by the Department of Education in KwaZulu-Natal is threatening to severely hamper the education of learners with special needs.
Members of the Portfolio Committee on Education have warned that special needs schools catering to hundreds of pupils are about to close down because of funding problems. However, the department said yesterday that schools should receive payments by next Thursday.
Committee member Sakhile Mngadi stated that the DA in KwaZulu-Natal is deeply concerned about the impending closure and financial collapse of several special needs schools due to the provincial Department of Education's (DoE) ongoing failure to pay subsidies on time.
