AFCON 2025

- HERMAN GIBBS

IN the aftermath of Bafana Bafana’s nervy 3-2 AFCON win over Zimbabwe, coach Hugo Broos has ramped up his clarion call for solid defensive play.

After the match, the whirlwind of celebration in the South African camp had hardly settled when Broos’s intense scrutiny of the team’s defensive performance highlighted significant concerns that could impede their progress in the competition.

The match kicked off on a high note for South Africa, with Tshepang Moremi striking early in the 7th minute to send a wave of excitement through the supporters.

Yet, the optimism was abruptly dampened just before halftime when Zimbabwe's Tawanda Maswanhise netted the equaliser, leaving Broos visibly frustrated as he faced his players in the dressing room.
