NEWCASTLE'S council leader has vowed to "explore all ways" to restore a ferry service to the Norwegian city of Bergen.

The DFDS ferry from Tyneside to the port stopped running in 2008.

But the impending launch of new direct flights from Newcastle to Bergen this year has sparked calls for the sea link to be brought back too.

The two cities have been twinned since 1968 and Bergen did send a Christmas tree to Newcastle every year for decades as a gesture of friendship, though that has ended due to environmental concerns.
