Village earns spot in UK's top 100

A FORMER mining village in Northumberland has beaten some of its larger and better known neighbours to make the top 100 of a new ranking of the best places to live in the UK.

Just like they did last year, property experts at Garrington have compiled a list of what they regard to be England and Wales' most sought-after postcodes and the 2025 standings made great reading for the North East, with Whitburn the highest-placed location in the region, coming in at third, while historic Northumberland town Alnwick also made the top 10.

Elsewhere on the list, Newcastle made the top 40, just a week after being branded one of the UK's 'worst cities, while elsewhere in Northumberland, Morpeth finished up in a much lower than expected 821, with Hexham in at 619 and Berwick-upon-Tweed being rated 146th best.
