TV star has bookshop hopes for hometown

PLANS for a new bookshop, cafe and flexible event space in Sunderland, spearheaded by television architect George Clarke, are currently under review by council planning chiefs, with locals being encouraged to voice their opinions.
An application has been submitted to Sunderland City Council's planning department proposing the transformation of 176 High Street West, adjacent to Sonny's and Pop Recs, into a fresh development led by Washington-born celebrity Mr Clarke.
The plans, unveiled last month, propose converting the ground floor of the Grade II-listed Sunniside building into a cultural bookshop, cafe and versatile event space, dubbed as a ‘community living room’.
