The Journal
|May 30, 2025
HANDING the Freedom of Newcastle was among the first duties for a “true born and bred Geordie” who has been named as the new lord mayor of Newcastle.
-
Liberal Democrat councillor Henry Gallagher took the congratulations of Tyneside’s leaders as he was named as the city’s new first citizen on Wednesday afternoon.
The 64-year-old, who has sat on the council since 2011 and represents the Dene and South Gosforth ward, succeeds Rob Higgins in the top ceremonial role.
Family members, friends, and council colleagues gathered at the Civic Centre heard how Coun Gallagher was born in Walker and has never lived more than three miles from the home he was born in.
