Parents of murdered schoolgirl recall their horror at crime scene
The Journal
|October 11, 2025
THE heartbroken parents of schoolgirl Holly Newton have described the chilling moment they arrived at the scene of her murder in Hexham two years ago. Holly, 15, was killed by "jealous" ex-boyfriend Logan MacPhail on January 27, 2023.
McPhail, then 16, was convicted of her murder at trial in August 2024.
Now, Holly's mum and stepdad Micala and Lee Trussler - who are campaigning for Holly’s Law to allow under-18s to be classed as victims of domestic abuse - have appeared on Channel 4 documentary Social Media Monsters and shared their horrific recollections of the moments they found out about her death.
Holly was killed in a “frenzied” attack in Priestpopple in the Northumberland market town, with the trial hearing how she had been stabbed 36 times. MacPhail had travelled 90 minutes from his Gateshead school to follow Holly as she left her own school, Queen Elizabeth High School.
