A NORTHUMBERLAND man has slammed those responsible for looking after the graveyard where his parents are buried after it was left to grow wild with nettles and thistles.

Man slams those responsible for graveyard's state

James Plenderleith said the state of the area showed a lack of respect for those at rest there.

The 56-year-old has previously complained about the situation at Rennington's All Saints Church. Northumberland County Council currently cuts the grass on behalf of the church, but areas are reportedly left to grow for “biodiversity” reasons.

Speaking to the Journal, James said: “It's been going on for years. I just want the place to be tidied up and respected.

“There are war graves in the cemetery as well. It’s not right.

“It hurts me to go, so I haven’t been as much as I should. There’s no respect for the people in the graveyard - the dead or their families.

“It’s a health and safety issue. Saying it is wild flowers is a cop-out, the weeds should be sprayed and killed off at the beginning of the season.”
