EDDIE Howe has shielded Anthony Elanga from criticism with the £55million man still waiting for his first goal or assist in Newcastle United colours.

The winger signed from Nottingham Forest was renowned for lighting up the big stage with his penetrating runs at the City Ground.

But he has not hit the ground running on Tyneside and has been haunted by an early miss when going one-on-one on his debut in the 0-0 stalemate against Aston Villa.

When asked about his lack of statistical input, Howe, speaking at his Press conference before the Arsenal game, said: “It’s harsh to say he’s got no goals or assists.
