SUNDERLAND have completed the signing of RB Leipzig defender Lutsharel Geertruida on a season-long loan to bolster Regis Le Bris’ options at the back.
The Black Cats have reportedly agreed a £2.5m loan fee with the Bundesliga outfit and they are also said to have the option to make the deal permanent next summer - for a reported £18m - according to Sky Sports, although Sunderland are yet to confirm that detail.
The Dutch international operates at right-back but can also play in the heart of defence and out on the left-hand side, having also played as defensive midfielder on occasion during his career.
The 25-year-old, who has made 17 appearances for the Netherlands national side, had been linked with a move to Ligue 1 side Marseille, but Sunderland swooped in on deadline day to get the deal over the line.
After his move was confirmed, Geertruida said: "First of all, I want to thank God for this opportunity, and I also want to thank the Club for their trust in me.
"I've always wanted to play in the Premier League, and I'm so excited now that my opportunity is here.
