Howe backs Pope after criticism ahead of clash in Belgium

NEWCASTLE United boss Eddie Howe has thrown his weight behind Nick Pope after the Toon shot-stopper hit a low point against Arsenal.

- By LEE RYDER Chief Newcastle writer

Whether Howe decides to rotate his goalkeepers against Union Saint-Gilloise remains to be seen with Aaron Ramsdale standing by for a potential Champions League debut for the Magpies.

Pope came under fire after a rushed distribution up the field leading to the corner, also fumbled, that led to Gabriel's winner at St James' Park.

But when asked about Pope, Howe said in Brussels: "It was one of the best performances from a goalkeeper I've seen up until that point.

"Of course, everyone will critique certain moments and decisions. We have to reflect that his actions in that moment were trying to help us win the game.
