A WORK by street artist Banksy has sold for £14,300, including fees, on Tyneside.

- TONY HENDERSON

Titled Morons, the screenprint was described by Newcastle auctioneers Anderson and Garland as rare and culturally significant, and a wry commentary on the art market itself.

The anonymous buyer of the work is from the North East.

Fred Wyrley-Birch, director at Anderson and Garland, said: “We're delighted to announce the sale of Banksy's Morons for £14,300. We're even more thrilled to report that, unlike one of his earlier pieces, this one didn’t self-destruct, catch fire, or shred itself during the sale.”

Originally released in 2006 as part of Banksy's Barely Legal exhibition in Los Angeles, Morons quickly became one of his most celebrated works.
