The words are in the mind, ready to roll out, yet somewhere between thought and voice the flow falters. It is more common than people suppose, and while the causes are not all settled the condition is far from hopeless. Precious time and compassionate effort can open paths to clearer communication.

When someone stutters the familiar patterns emerge. A sound is stretched out, a syllable repeated, a block of silence falls where access to a word should have been smooth. Tension may build in the lips or jaw, a pause may linger. These disruptions often vary with the situation: being hurried, trying to speak in front of others, when excited or tired the struggle can deepen. Many children display these signs, and in some the fluency returns with little intervention. Yet for others the pattern settles and evolves into a longer-term reality.
