Sri Lanka's first Hydrogen Methane Breathalyzer unveiled at Faculty of Medicine

Marking a historic leap forward in clinical diagnostics and academic research, the Department of Physiology at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Colombo (UCFM), has officially launched Sri Lanka's first Hydrogen Methane Breathalyzer. The cutting-edge device, now fully operational, also signals the completion of the newly refurbished Gastrointestinal Physiology Laboratory, a facility now primed to conduct daily clinical investigations for patients.

This advancement is a significant stride in enhancing gastrointestinal diagnostics in Sri Lanka, where access to non-invasive, advanced testing methods has been limited. The Hydrogen Methane Breathalyzer plays a crucial role in identifying conditions such as Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO), lactose intolerance, and other carbohydrate malabsorption disorders.

Speaking at the ceremonial launch, Professor Indika Mahesh Karunathilake, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Colombo, underscored the broader impact of this milestone.
