Saving children from screen addiction

In an age dominated by digital screens, safeguarding children—especially wean-aged toddlers—from screen addiction has become a critical concern for parents, educators, and pediatricians alike.

As smartphones, tablets, and televisions increasingly substitute for playmates and babysitters, the need to consciously protect young minds from becoming overly reliant on digital stimulation has never been more urgent.

The weaning period, typically from six months to two years, is a foundational phase of cognitive, emotional, and physical development. It is also a time when the temptation to hand a child a screen can feel irresistible—whether to pacify a tantrum, occupy them during meals, or offer parents a much-needed break. However, experts warn that early exposure to screens can interfere with vital developmental processes.

According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), children under two should not be exposed to screens at all, except for video calls. Despite this, surveys reveal that many toddlers spend two to three hours a day glued to screens. The consequences are worrying: delayed speech, reduced attention span, poor sleep patterns, and decreased interest in physical play and human interaction.
