How to tackle bullying
The Island
|September 10, 2025
Bullying in schools has become one of the most pressing issues in modern education, undermining both the emotional well-being and academic performance of students. It often manifests in subtle forms such as teasing, name-calling, exclusion from social groups and spreading rumours, as well as in more direct and damaging forms like physical intimidation or cyber harassment. The impact is profound. Children who are bullied can carry the scars for years, affecting their confidence, relationships and even their prospects in adulthood.
-
Dealing with this problem requires more than simple punishment of offenders. A school community must adopt a culture that does not tolerate aggression or cruelty in any form. This begins with clear communication. Students need to be taught from an early age that respect, kindness and empathy are not optional but essential qualities of citizenship.
At the same time, schools should create safe spaces where victims of bullying feel comfortable seeking help. Too often children keep silent out of fear of retaliation or because they believe adults will dismiss their concerns as trivial. When a student confides in a teacher or counsellor, the response must be immediate and supportive. Listening with patience, taking the issue seriously and assuring the child that action will follow are crucial steps in building trust. Without such assurance, students will continue to suffer in silence.
