Helping your dog stay calm amidst loud sounds
The Island
|July 29, 2025
Few things can be as distressing for a dog owner as watching their beloved pet cower in fear during a thunderstorm or fireworks display.
-
Dogs, with their acute hearing, are far more sensitive to loud sounds than humans, and what we might find mildly startling can be downright terrifying for them. Whether it’s the crack of thunder, the boom of fireworks, or the roar of construction equipment, loud noises can trigger anxiety, panic, and even destructive behaviour in dogs.
Fortunately, there are several ways owners can help their dogs stay calm amidst such unsettling sounds.
Dogs interpret loud and unfamiliar noises as potential threats. This instinctive reaction—rooted in their survival mechanisms—causes the “fight or flight" response. Some dogs hide under furniture, tremble uncontrollably, bark excessively, or attempt to flee. Recognising these signs early is crucial for managing the situation effectively.
