Gender gap in carbon emissions

When it comes to the climate crisis, we often hear that everyone must do their part.

But a groundbreaking new study from France reveals that not everyone is contributing to the problem equally — and not everyone’s responsibility is the same either.

According to economists Ondine Berland of the London School of Economics and Political Science and Marion Leroutier of CREST-ENSAE Paris, men emit significantly more carbon than women, particularly in the areas of transport and food. Drawing on data from 15,000 individuals in France, their study found that men generate 26% more greenhouse gas emissions than women. Even after controlling for variables like income, education, and household size, the gender gap in emissions still stood at 18%.

The study, which focuses on emissions from transport and food — two major contributors to global warming — suggests that cultural behaviours and gender norms play a decisive role. Men, the researchers found, are more likely to drive long distances, use personal vehicles over public transport, and consume meat in larger quantities. Women, on the other hand, tend to choose more sustainable transport options and consume less red meat, both of which reduce their overall carbon footprint.
