If electrolytes help athletes perform better, then surely everyone should be drinking them. Yet health experts caution that many of these claims deserve a careful second look.

Electrolytes are minerals such as sodium, potassium and magnesium that carry electrical charges in the body. They play important roles in regulating fluid balance, muscle contraction and nerve signals. These minerals are lost in small amounts through sweat and urine, which is why they must be replaced through food and drink. For people engaged in intense physical activity, especially endurance sports or prolonged exercise in hot weather, electrolyte drinks can help restore minerals lost through heavy sweating. In those situations, they serve a genuine purpose.
