After a disaster, caring for your pets is an important part of getting life back on track.

Caring for pets after a disaster

Pets rely on you not only for food and shelter but also for comfort and a sense of security when everything around them feels unfamiliar. Many pets can become confused, scared or disoriented because familiar scents and landmarks may have changed. This can make them more likely to wander off, get lost or even get hurt if they are allowed to roam freely before they have a chance to reorient themselves to their surroundings. It is a good idea to keep dogs on a leash and keep cats in a carrier or a confined area until you are certain the environment is safe. Be especially cautious of hazards like debris, sharp objects and downed power lines that may have resulted from the disaster. Pet behaviour may change temporarily because of fear and stress. A normally calm animal might act defensively or unpredictably, so patience and gentle reassurance are key while they adjust. If you notice unusual signs of distress or illness that do not improve, contact your veterinarian for advice or a checkup.
