Animal world: Sleeping with eyes open

The Island

When we think of sleep, the image that often comes to mind is one of complete stillness and shut eyes.

Animal world: Sleeping with eyes open

But in the animal kingdom, not all creatures follow this pattern. In fact, a surprising number of animals are known to sleep with their eyes open—a behaviour that may appear unsettling to humans but serves vital evolutionary purposes.

The phenomenon is particularly common among birds, reptiles, marine mammals, and certain fish. This seemingly strange habit is not a sign of restlessness or poor sleep quality. Rather, it reflects remarkable adaptations designed to enhance survival in the wild.

One of the primary reasons animals sleep with their eyes open is vigilance. In the natural world, danger can strike at any moment. Predators often target the weak, the young, or the inattentive. For prey animals, the ability to remain semi-alert even during rest is a crucial defence mechanism. Sleeping with one or both eyes open gives the appearance of wakefulness and allows for quicker response to potential threats.
