Provost Anthea Dickson is encouraging people to make major contingency plans in event of a major power outage after being caught up in the dramatic events in Spain earlier this week.

The Garnock Valley councillor missed out on the worst experiences of the power loss which lasted for 16 hours in her area but still had to be resilient to get through the challenges.

On Monday, her final full day of a family holiday in southern Spain, she realised there had been a major power cut when tills started going off in the shops.

She said: "The family gathered together for a holiday in the south of Spain. Everyone thought it was just our street but they realised it was the whole town and someone was able to get a phone line and heard it was actually national. The shops wanted to close but they had electronic shutters and some staff had to stay overnight.

"The petrol station closed so no one could fill up. I ran out of phone charge but couldn't contact the rest of the family. But it was very pleasant for us because we happened to be going to a restaurant which had an old-fashioned cooker as we had not prepared cold food.
