THE cheapest places to rent have been revealed - although prices in Yorkshire are on the rise.

Provisional data from the Office for National Statistics reveals the average private rent in Yorkshire and the Humber hit £833 per month in the year to October - rising four per cent from £802 the previous year. This also represents a 29 per cent surge from an estimated £646 monthly five years ago.

Valuation Office Agency rent officers gather pricing information from various sources, including landlords and letting agents, aiming to collect data on roughly 10 per cent of the market.

You can compare the rents in every Yorkshire local authority area in the list below.

York recorded the steepest rental costs in Yorkshire at £1,134 monthly, while Hull was the most affordable at £652

In October, the average private rent in Great Britain stood at £1,371 per month. This was an increase of £65, or five per cent, compared to the same period last year.

The data also reveals the varying costs for different types of homes in Yorkshire and The Humber, ranging from £591 for a one-bedroom property to £1,280 for a home with four or more bedrooms in October.

Among the property types in the region: Renting a detached house cost £1,123 per month.

A semidetached house was priced at £886 per month.

A terraced house came in at £825 per month.

Kirklees

The figures also show the different costs for various homes in Kirklees, from £524 for a one-bed property to £1,111 for a home with four or more bedrooms in October.

■Average private rent per month year to October 2020: £559

Detached house per month: £994

■Semidetached house per month: £760

Terraced house per month: £659
