Striker signing mood of gloom

THE wait for Plymouth Argyle to bring in someone to wear the number nine vacated by Ryan Hardie earlier this summer goes on, and so the frustration of the Green Army continues to grow with every passing day.

Tom Cleverley has been asked at every Press conference since the start of preseason about the club's attempts to add attacking firepower, and it was the same again on Thursday. This time the Pilgrims' boss revealed 'a significant bid was in place' but added it could be another couple of weeks before it was all finalised.

The 22-year-old duo of Owen Oseni and Bim Pepple, both of them unproven at League One level, are still the Pilgrims' only two strikers as it stands. As Cleverley has himself noted before, the number nine is 'the marquee position' in any team and it is clear for all to see Argyle have a huge void there at the moment.

Debutant Caleb Watts produced an excellent performance as a makeshift striker in the season-opening 3-1 defeat by Barnsley at Home Park last Saturday. He got the Pilgrims' goal and went close to scoring on three other occasions.
