Remembering Sparksy: My friend and the voice of Argyle

IT is hard for me to believe that it is already three years since Plymouth lost one of it’s most popular and larger than life personalities in Gordon Sparks due to cancer.

- By CHRIS ERRINGTON

Sparksy, as we all knew him, was the Voice of Plymouth Argyle, describing so many memorable Pilgrims' moments with his commentaries, both for Plymouth Sound and later BBC Radio Devon.

I had the privilege of not only sitting alongside Sparksy on many occasions as his co-commentator but also calling him a friend. My thoughts today on the third anniversary of his passing are with Heather, Kirsty, Holly and all of their family.

I know they will remember with tremendous pride how Sparksy became such a part of the fabric of life in Plymouth, and how his memory lives on.

Go to any Argyle game at Home Park, and in the buildup to kickoff you can hear a clip of him commentating. 'Two-nil, that's it, Argyle are up'.

His words from the title and promotion-clinching 2-0 victory over Queens Park Rangers in 2004.
