Installation is about creating fishing debate

ARTIST PUTS HUMANS IN PLACE OF ANIMALS TO HIGHLIGHT SUFFERING

AN artist with a propensity to shock in order to get her message across is putting on a unique installation on the Hoe this weekend aimed at ‘sparking a conversation’ around the fishing industry.

Stephanie Lane’s art installations which are touring the UK include milking women to highlight the dairy industry, and putting humans in the same type of birthing cages – farrowing crates – used in pig farming.

She places humans in the same position as animals often are to highlight her view of the cruelty of farming and the belief that animals deserve to be recognised as sentient beings – a theory called specieism.

Her latest work will be on the Hoe foreshore this Saturday, between Tinside Lido and the Lion’s Den, from 1.30pm, and will see ‘performers’ put into fishing nets and adorned with fake blood in order to show how fish are the innocent victims of the fishing industry.
