THE Herald wrote: “Within an hour of the unexpected news in the House of Commons last night of the proposed extension of the Royal Navy Memorial on Plymouth Hoe, Mr HM Medland, Drake's Labour member, was in conference with the Minister of Defence in the Lobby.

“Mr Medland is strongly opposed to this and said: ‘I am all in favour of the names being recorded, but I think they could very well be deposited in an appropriate Grecian urn in front of the present monument. But to use further space on the Hoe, which already looks like a graveyard, is in my view not only a waste of money, but an affront to aesthetic taste.’
