Golfers rise to challenge of Nicklaus course
The Herald
|June 05, 2023
GREY skies and a non-to cool breeze kept the players alert during the home match with Tavistock, as well as playing on the Nicklaus course.
Always a tough encounter, this year proved no different as the eight groups battled it out with their opponents and also the demands of the course. Three matches played through to the last but the other five were decided earlier as St mellion recorded a 5-3 win.
As has happened in previous encounters, home advantage plays a significant impact and so the home victory was not surprising. However the players received sobering words in after dinner speeches as they were reminded that last year, St Mellion also won at home by an even greater margin (7-1) and somehow snatched defeat from the jaws of victory when playing in the return leg! Gaining the five points for St Mellion were the pairings of Ian Edwards and Pete Williams (won 5&3), Bruce Sobey and Keith Field (4&2), Nuke Page and Will Carslaw (3&1), Chris DeBeaufort and Mike D Newton (4&3) and John Raphael and Dave Shawcross (1 up).
Tavistock's winners were Phill Hobbs and Ian Appleton (5&4), Graham Horton and Michael Hearsum (2&1) and Tony Russell and Angus McPhie (2&1).
John Raphael won nearest the pin for the host as did Graham Norton for Tavistock.
