Backlash over plans to build on grassland

THERE has been a huge backlash over plans to build on a patch of grassland in a Plymouth housing estate. Residents in Tamerton Foliot are upset at a proposal to put six houses on green space which has been used by families for decades at Mary Dean Avenue.
Already 92 objections have been submitted to Plymouth City Council, after Manchester-based property company Maltford Ltd asked for in-principle planning permission to build on the privately-owned 0.22-hectare site. Comments can still be made to the council before May 29.
Among those objecting is Tamerton Foliot Village Conservation Society, which wants the "communal" green space kept for the benefit of the community. Dennis Silverwood, the society's chairman, has written to the council to raise concerns that developing the land would increase traffic through the "village", increase congestion, and exacerbate hazards for pedestrians, including school.
Cllr Carol Ney, Independent councillor for Southway, said she had been contacted by several residents who have raised concerns about the proposed development, the loss of "children's play areas on the green piece of land", and parking issues. She has asked for the application to be "called in" and discussed by councillors before any decision is made.
