As a Laira resident, I am behind speed restrictions

AS a long-term resident of Laira, I was delighted at the installation of speed restrictions. Over the time we have lived here, we've lost two parked cars by fast drivers who have lost control and seen neighbours suffer similarly with damaged vehicles and pets killed.

The signage to indicate a 20 mph zone is so clear it isn’t far off from being seen from outer space.

There has been tremendous publicity about it across various media and you would need to be blind not to be aware of the many warnings.

A full-page spread (The Herald March 7) only serves to whip up more angst by those who don’t live here and feel ‘entitled’ to complain about something they don’t live with. The law is the law.

If motorists don’t like it there are other roads they can use to reach their destination. Perhaps if concrete speed humps were added instead, the repair of damage to tyres, exhausts and chassis would outweigh the cost of a speeding ticket along with the inconvenience. It’s one to think about.

More could definitely be done on fly-tipping

AN interesting letter (The Herald, March 7), by Edward Kynaston, who discussed where the monies from fly-tipping fines goes. He also discusses that if these monies went to local authorities then there may be a greater incentive for said authority to chase up the offenders, an idea I'd back.

I also think local authorities should also be pursuing contractors, many completing works for local authorities, who fail to clear the work area on completion of works.

We see discarded signs, barriers, materials, clothing, etc, left after the workforce has departed and it seems to stay where it lays for eons.
