TOM Cleverley has been 'pleasantly surprised' by the quality and mentality of the Plymouth Argyle players he already has to work with as head coach.

Argyle working hard to add depth to squad - Cleverley

However, the recently-appointed Pilgrims' boss has admitted the depth of the squad is not where it needs to be, especially when it comes to forwards and central midfielders. Striker Owen Oseni signed for Argyle from Scottish Premiership side St Mirren yesterday, but the Pilgrims could probably do with another couple of players who are capable of leading the attack.

Cleverley also spoke in an interview with TalkSPORT on Thursday about how he thought League One would be 'super competitive' this season but 'top six is more than achievable' for Argyle.

On the welcome he has received at Argyle, Cleverley told Andy Goldstein and Darren Bent: "They are super passionate about their football down here. We started the pre-season last Friday so I have had three or four working days with the lads now, I like what I see. I'm excited to get my teeth stuck into it."

Bent, who was a team-mate of Cleverley at Aston Villa, raised the issue of Argyle's location in the far south-west of England, calling it 'miles away' but the Pilgrims' boss replied: "You have to embrace it. As soon as I picked the phone up to the staff who came down with me, they all said 'yes' straight away and that's what you need really.

"You can't have any hesitation about coming down here. It has its logistical obstacles but we find solutions and we have got a lot of passion about it. We have got to embrace it."
