Argyle suffer double late blow to bow out of Women's FA Cup

Oxford United's Emma Thompson celebrates scoring the winning goal against Plymouth Argyle

(EDDIE KEOGH - THE FA)

Argyle suffered late heartbreak in the Women's FA Cup as Oxford United scored twice in the closing stages to claim a dramatic 2-1 victory in the third round. The Greens were minutes away from a memorable away win despite playing most of the second half with 10 players, but late goals from Ruby Sealey and Emma Thompson turned the tie on its head and brought Argyle's FA Cup run to a cruel end.

Argyle made a positive start and showed early intent, pressing Oxford high up the pitch and moving the ball confidently through midfield. The first clear opening of the match fell to Tianna Teisar in the eighth minute following a slick passing move from right to left, but her strike from the edge of the area sailed over the crossbar.

Teisar continued to trouble the Oxford defence and was central to the breakthrough when she was pushed from behind as she attempted to latch onto a through ball inside the penalty area and the referee immediately pointed to the spot.

Ellie Noble stepped up and showed composure beyond her years, calmly sending the goalkeeper the wrong way to give Argyle a deserved 1-0 lead.
