Welfare anger Labour MPs voice concern to ministers

Scores of Labour MPs have voiced significant doubt about the government's welfare changes in a tense meeting with the work and pensions secretary Liz Kendall.

At a private meeting in parliament attended by about 100 MPs with Kendall and the disability minister, Stephen Timms, MPs said there were grave concerns voiced about the huge hit to incomes that the disability reforms would mean. One MP said a party whip appeared to be noting who was raising concerns.

Many aired particular concerns about how hard some disabled people would be hit if they were found newly ineligible for personal independence payments (Pip) - which can be claimed by those who are both in work and out of work. The criteria is set to be significantly tightened, saving around £5bn.
