UK pulls £870m support for gas project in Mozambique

The government yesterday pulled a controversial £870m support package for a major gas project in Mozambique that has been accused of contributing to the climate crisis and fuelling deadly terror attacks in the region.
The business secretary, Peter Kyle, said the UK would withdraw its export finance to the Mozambique liquefied natural gas (LNG) project five years after it drew bitter opposition from campaigners over its impact on human rights, security and the environment.
The decision to cut support for the project emerged as its developer, the French oil company TotalEnergies, prepares to restart the scheme, which has been on hold since Islamist insurgents attacked nearby communities, killing more than 800 people in 2021.
Kyle said the export credit body UK Export Finance (UKEF) had taken the decision to end its participation after a "comprehensive assessment of the project and the interests of UK taxpayers". He added: "The government believes that UK financing of this project will not advance the interests of our country."
