Musk's drive for cuts hit by errors and confusion

When Elon Musk's department of government efficiency (Doge) posted a "wall of receipts" boasting of major savings, it was billed as a radical shake-up of federal government.

Instead the initiative has been mired in errors, confusion and obfuscation. In the latest fiasco, Doge has stealthily expunged the five largest items on the list after the savings were revealed to be illusory. The deletions were made on Tuesday without explanation.

A White House spokesperson would only say that the Tesla tycoon's slash-and-burn initiative had "identified billions of dollars in savings".
