Mahmood: nationhood under threat from border failings

The failure to control European borders is eroding trust in politicians and the concept of nation states, Shabana Mahmood will say today.

As she hosts a meeting in London to discuss migration routes through the western Balkans, the home secretary will say that international cooperation is the way to curb irregular migration.

The meeting will be attended by her counterparts from across the western Balkans, as well as from other European countries.

The summit is aimed at ensuring European nations strike new deals to tackle illegal migration.

At the gathering, Mahmood will say: "The public rightly expect that their government will be able to determine who enters their country, and who must leave. Today, in this country, and I know in many if not all of yours, that is not the case.
