India to stop buying oil from Russia, Trump says, as tariffs cut

Donald Trump claimed India had agreed to stop buying Russian oil yesterday as he announced plans to cut US tariffs on Indian exports.
The US president said he and the Indian prime minister, Narendra Modi - “one of my greatest friends,” he proclaimed - had agreed to strike a trade deal.
While full details have not been disclosed, Trump claimed India - the second largest purchaser of Russian crude oil - had agreed to stop buying Russian oil, after many months of pressure from the US.
After a call with Modi, Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform: “This will help END THE WAR in Ukraine, which is taking place right now, with thousands of people dying each and every week!”
Modi hailed the “wonderful” news on tariffs in a post on X but did not explicitly mention his country’s oil purchases.
