France US attacks MEP over Statue of Liberty quip

The White House has rejected a quip by a French member of the European parliament who called for the return of the Statue of Liberty, saying that France would be "speaking German right now" without the US's help during the second world war.
Raphaël Glucksmann, of the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats, said - tongue in cheek - that it appeared to him the US had come to "despise" the statue as well as what it symbolizes given Donald Trump's decision to "side with the tyrants" against Ukraine.
"So it will be just fine here at home," Glucksmann said.
