Bafta awards facing new criticism after top film prizes all handed to white people
The Guardian
|February 21, 2023
Three years after the outcry over an all-white acting nominations lineup, the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (Bafta) might have hoped that its 2023 awards would have been a celebration of cinema.
Yet despite an overhaul of its nominations system, viewers have again voiced criticism - while also blaming the industry - as every top award went to a white person.
"I watched clips of the #Baftas and didn't see a single black or brown person win," Sky News presenter Saima Mohsin wrote. "Overlooked and ignored time and again. So depressing. Unconscious bias and systemic."
Social media users shared images of the winners with not a single actor of colour photographed. Others noted the performances from the singer Little Simz, actor Ariana DeBose and co-host Alison Hammond, saying their appearances were not enough.
