Zetland Gold Cup has a proud history as Redcar people's race
The Gazette
|May 28, 2025
ONE of the oldest Cleveland Spring Bank Holiday traditions is the running of the Zetland Gold Cup at Redcar Racecourse.
-
The Zetland Welter Handicap Plate was the first race on the official opening day racecard of August 9, 1872.
The new racecourse replaced the less formal centuries old tradition of racing horses on the sands.
The Jockey Club's introduction of compulsory prize money for each race laid the burden of cost onto the shoulders of the public.
An admission charge could only be collected if there was a venue to be admitted to.
