WHEN cold weather sets in, it’s easy to think the growing season is over.

Yet November is an ideal month to turn your attention indoors. Growing fresh crops on a bright kitchen windowsill adds colour, fragrance and colour to your home while keeping your connection with nature alive through winter.

A thriving ledge of herbs, leaves and microgreens can provide regular harvests, help reduce food waste and save money.

Studies show that nurturing greenery indoors also supports wellbeing and relieves stress, making these small growing projects as good for the mind as they are for the plate.

Finding the perfect spot

Choose a southor west-facing window for maximum light.

Keep indoor herbs and salads in a warm, frost-free location with good airflow and drainage, and away from direct heat from radiators.

Use free-draining peat-free compost and pots with holes for drainage. If your light levels are poor, a compact grow light can help plants stay sturdy. Feed occasionally with a diluted liquid fertiliser, and mist leaves occasionally to prevent dryness from central heating.
