War of words at plans for 4.95% council tax rise

A POLITICAL argument has sprung out of proposals to increase council tax by almost 5% in Stockton.

- By GARETH LIGHTFOOT Local democracy reporter

Leaders of Stockton Council are "very reluctantly" proposing a council tax rise of 4.95% next financial year - a 2.95% rise in core council tax, plus 2% for the government's adult social care levy.

Deputy council leader Councillor Paul Rowling said the council was facing "unprecedented budget pressures" and huge demand for services, particularly children's and adults' services.

The Labour-led authority is facing an estimated budget gap of £6.7m for 2026-27, predicted to rise to £18.4m in 2028-29, after the proposed council tax increase. The council says it expects to make £9.9m savings by 2028-29 through its "Powering Our Future" programme, and plans to make more savings to close the gap.

The cabinet will discuss the financial plans in a meeting in the council chamber at Dunedin House, Thornaby at 5pm on Monday.
