Public consultation on permit for waste incinerator 'soon'

THE Environment Agency says it will begin a public consultation soon over the process which will allow a proposed £300m household 'black bag' waste plant to operate.

The agency said a draft environmental permit had been developed for the Tees Valley Energy Recovery Facility (TVERF) due to be built on the Grangetown Prairie site at Teesworks near Redcar.

A spokesman said: "A draft permit has been developed following consideration of evidence submitted through an application.

"We will be proceeding with a public consultation soon."

The agency said it would assess the impact from the proposed installation on the environment and human health and whether it met relevant legislation, including the use of best available techniques to minimise emissions.

The TVERF, which was granted planning permission in 2023, will burn so-called residual waste unable to be recycled, collected from seven local authorities who are partners in the scheme - Redcar and Cleveland Council, Hartlepool, Middlesbrough, Stockton, Darlington, Durham and Newcastle - creating energy for the National Grid.
