MIDDLESBROUGH'S life expectancy continues to be lower than other areas in the North East and England.

Middlesbrough has lowest life expectancy in the North East

Data shared at a Middlesbrough Council committee meeting on Wednesday April 9, showed that between 2020 and 2022, average life expectancy at birth in the council area was lower than neighbouring authority Redcar and Cleveland, as well as being lower than the North East average and the national average.

Women and men in the town can expect to live approximately three-and-a-half years less than the average person in England, as the life expectancy gap between Middlesbrough and the English average narrowed slightly for men compared to 2018-2020, but stayed the same for women.

Mark Adams, Director of Public Health South Tees spoke to councillors at Middlesbrough's Overview and Scrutiny Board. He said: "Middlesbrough has a lower average life expectancy at birth compared to Redcar and Cleveland, lower than the North East and lower than England."

The data presented shows that between 2020 and 2022, the average life expectancy at birth in Middlesbrough was 75.4 years for men and 79.5 years for women. The national average for men was 78.9 years (3.5 years difference), while women across the country as a whole could expect to live 82.8 years (3.3 years difference).
