Blades as Wilder departs Bramall Lane ‘with great regret’

SHEFFIELD United have swiftly appointed Ruben Selles as their new head coach after the decision to sack former Middlesbrough boss Chris Wilder, writes CRAIG JOHNS.

Wilder's second spell in charge of his boyhood club was brought to an end on Wednesday after the Blades’ defeat in the play-off final to Sunderland. Despite the club announcement claiming it to be a mutual decision, it is believed that the former Boro boss was sacked. A statement from Wilder suggested as much too.

Though Wilder guided Sheffield United to a third-placed finish where they collected 92 points in total (with two deducted after an EFL sanction), their failure to win promotion meant it wasn't enough to save Wilder's job.

Instead, Blades owners COH Sports group have appointed Selles as his replacement, with the former Reading boss available after being sacked by Hull City.
